The amazing actress and bon vivant, Tallulah (“I’m as pure as the driven slush.”) Bankhead was born 114 years ago on this date.
Shown here in the center, in the mink coat, in her iconic role as Constance “Connie” Porter in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1944 classic Lifeboat. (Watch it here)
She caught pneumonia twice during filming but was rewarded by Hitchcock for being a trouper with a puppy he named for himself.
She rivaled her friend Dorothy Parker with her acerbic wit and comments, mostly at her own expense. Besides her famous slush quote above there are many more:
“My father warned me about men and booze, but he never mentioned a wordabout women and cocaine.”
“Only good girls keep diaries. Bad girls don’t have the time.”
